Vinyl Fence Installation #2 - Digging Vinyl Fence Post Holes
The depth of the post holes will be subject to a few factors.
- The height of your fence
- Your location…Is it warm or cold?
- The quality of your fence
Hole diameter size for 5 x 5 posts = 12″
Hole diameter size for 4 x 4 posts = 10″
Depending on your location your post depth should be anywhere from 30″ to 48″. In colder climates it’s usually better to dig deeper to the frost line.

Approximately two thirds of the fence post should be above leaving the remaining third of the post underground. Add another 6″ and fill the base of the hole with gravel or small stones. The gravel will drain moisture away from the post. Also, if you live in a colder climate, make sure to make the bottom of the post hole wider than the top to provide a solid base and to prevent frost heave.
